What is GENRE?

Genre is the name given to the different types of stories.  They have features that help you decide which genre they belong to.  Take a look at the definitions below...

Fantasy:
Good verses evil in the magic based stories often set in Medieval Times.  There are often talking animals, mythical creatures or magic users involved in journeys or quests.

Historical Fiction:
Famous historical people before 1970 in real places and real events.

Mystery:
Detectives, investigators or crimes at a crime scene, detective agency or in a creepy situation try to find the clues to solve a problem.

Science Fiction:
Future based with mutants, robots or mad scientists involved in time travel, spaceships or technology try to protect the world from alien invasion, survive new worlds or failed experiments.

Informational:
Find out information from non-fiction books, newspaper articles, websites or blogs.  Check the validity (is it current or correct) of this information - is the source reliable?

Autobiography & Memoir:
The story of someone's life written by themselves or just a short account of an experience (memoir).

Biography:
The story of someone's life, written by someone else.

Poetry:
A shortened form of writing with similes or alliteration that shares the author's opinion or feelings.

Traditional Literature:
Stories shared over generations like myths, folk tales, fairy tales or nursery rhymes.

Humour:
Joke books, funny stories or things that make you laugh.  Get these books out to share in class - we are all up for a giggle.

Magazine:
A glossy book containing stories, information and pictures.

Comic or Graphic Novel:
A graphically illustrated story, simplified with pictures and speech bubbles.

Sophisticated Picture Book:
A picture book looking at challenging ideas that would appeal to an older audience, with greater amounts of text and supported by illustrations.

Realistic Fiction:
Everyday people doing everyday things in a modern time in realistic places like family or school stories.

Genre challenge:

A good reader reads from a range of these genre - rather than just their favourite. I challenge you to read one of each of these genre by the end of the school year.

Leave a comment if you are brave enough to take up this challenge!

  1. I have just finished four kids fantasy books and one realistic fiction. I need to look at reading some different genre books next.
